Recently, Sue enjoyed a wonderful 7-night AmaWaterways Rhine River Cruise with a group of her high school friends and shares her recommendation for 3 nights in Amsterdam.
Many Rhine river cruises begin or end in the vibrant city of Amsterdam, a place rich in beauty, culture, and history. To truly soak up the charm, I recommend spending at least three nights here to dive into its many attractions, whether before you embark on your cruise or after you return.
🏨 Where to Stay?
If you want to be near the bustling train station—with its plethora of shops and restaurants—the Barbizon Palace is a fantastic choice. This spot is also close to the Red Light District and Chinatown, so you're in the heart of it all. Prefer tranquility among world-class museums? Park Central Amsterdam is ideal, just a 10-minute walk to the iconic Rijksmuseum in the museum district.
🍴 Where to Eat?
For a truly memorable meal, Sama Sebo is my top pick. This Indonesian Rice Table restaurant has been a favorite of mine since 1981—delicious, authentic, and budget-friendly. It’s located just a 10-minute walk from the museum area. If staying at The Barbizon, don’t miss The Prince Charming, a brand-new gem just steps away that ends your meal with tiny gummy frogs—fun and tasty!
🎨 What to Do? Amsterdam overflows with exciting experiences! On my latest trip, highlights included:
🚲 How to Get Around?
Amsterdam is wonderfully walkable thanks to its flat layout. Feeling adventurous? Join the locals on bicycles—the city has twice as many bikes as residents! Alternatively, the reliable tram system connects you anywhere you want to go, starting and ending at the central train station. Uber and taxis are also available, but for a true local experience, hop on a tram or rent a bike.
