San Antonio: incredible beauty and rich history waiting right in our own backyard

When we think of travel, our minds often wander to far-off destinations—charming European cities, exotic African landscapes, or sunny Caribbean beaches. Yet, sometimes we overlook the incredible beauty and rich history waiting right in our own backyard, right here in the United States. Take San Antonio, for example—a vibrant city bursting with culture, history, and unforgettable experiences. It’s a destination that truly deserves a spot on your travel list!

WHEN TO VISIT

I’ve visited San Antonio twice—once in December 2023 when the Riverwalk sparkled with Christmas lights and mild daytime temps in the 60s-70s, cooling at night. While I recommend visiting during cooler months, summer temps in the mid-80s are still comfortable with plenty of shade and hydration, cooling to the low 70s for lively evenings out.

WHERE TO STAY

When planning your San Antonio trip, picking the right neighborhood is key. My family stayed along the Riverwalk—the city’s vibrant heart—steps from top sights like The Alamo, great dining, and nightlife. It’s perfect for families, couples, or solo travelers wanting easy access and charm.

  1. Home2 Suites: this was our family pick—quiet yet just a short walk to the lively Riverwalk. Spacious suites with kitchens gave us space to relax and prep meals. Family perks included free breakfast with fun Texas-shaped waffles, evening teas, and a pool with patio—perfect for kids and parents. A cozy, practical choice for families visiting San Antonio!
  2. Thompson San Antonio Riverwalk: A perfect mix of historic charm and modern comfort for families. With spacious rooms and a peaceful courtyard, it’s a relaxing retreat right on the vibrant Riverwalk. Steps from The Alamo, riverboat tours, and parks, it offers easy access to family fun and cultural adventures. ACTIVITIES WE ENJOYED:

My family enjoyed a full four days soaking up all San Antonio has to offer, and even then, there was still so much more to discover and experience!

Alamo - The Alamo, one of San Antonio’s most iconic landmarks, is just a short walk from the lively Riverwalk and a must-visit for any traveler. It was a favorite of my 13-year-old son, who loves history. The site symbolizes Texas bravery and heritage, offering engaging exhibits and well-preserved grounds that bring the 1836 battle for independence to life for all ages.

  • Pro tip – During the Christmas holiday, the Alamo’s "A Homemade Christmas" event showcases 19th-century Texas holiday traditions with live demonstrations of crafts, storytelling, and activities, giving visitors a unique glimpse into frontier life during the season.

Narrated River Cruise with Go Rio Cruises – I highly recommend making this one of your first activities in San Antonio. It’s a relaxing, unique way to soak in the city’s rich history, vibrant culture, and beautiful scenery. As you float along the river, a guide shares captivating stories and insights about local landmarks and legends—setting the perfect tone for your trip.

The Saga - This awe-inspiring video art projection shares the story of the land, water, people, battles, and development of San Antonio, the Lone Star State, and United States history. The Saga projection covers 7,000 square feet of light, color and visual narration projected onto the majestic façade of San Fernando Cathedral- the oldest continuously operating cathedral in the United States.

San Antonio Missions – While I don’t usually suggest baseball games on vacation, watching the San Antonio Missions was a fun, memorable experience for my family. This Minor League team offers a lively, family-friendly atmosphere with plenty to keep everyone entertained. It’s a great way to enjoy local culture, cheer on rising stars, savor classic ballpark snacks, and snap a photo with mascot Ballapena and his chancla-wielding mom, MamaPena!

And sometimes something magical happens on vacation....(our oldest son, Tray, proposes)

OUR FOOD JOURNEY

San Antonio boasts a wide range of dining, from authentic Tex-Mex to upscale fare. These are the spots my family enjoyed—each offering something unique and creating memorable meals that perfectly complemented our San Antonio adventure.

Casa Rio - Opened in 1946, Casa Rio is the oldest restaurant on the Riverwalk. They continue the tradition of serving the “Regular Plate,” a sampler featuring a cheese enchilada, Mexican rice, refried beans, a tamale, and their famous Chili con Carne.

The County Line - Famous for their hearty, tender ribs, perfectly lean brisket, and flavorful spicy sausage, this spot is a true barbecue gem. Be sure to pair your meal with their fresh, warm, homemade bread — it’s the perfect complement to soak up all the delicious flavors.

Our San Antonio trip was simply amazing! From its vibrant culture and warm atmosphere to rich history and delicious food, my family loved every moment. It created lasting memories, and we’re already planning our next visit to explore even more of this incredible city!

Pro tip: San Antonio’s Riverwalk isn’t just for dining and sightseeing—it’s also incredibly romantic. My son even proposed there, surrounded by twinkling lights and flowing water! If you’re planning a special celebration or looking for a magical spot, the Riverwalk is full of enchanting corners perfect for unforgettable moments.
